It was mid-afternoon when we returned to the village of Harrow and secured a cab to take us to the school campus once more.

"Do you think Mr. Welldon will cooperate?" I asked, knowing quite well the lengths that headmasters at private schools would go to in order to protect the privacy of their students and their very rich families.

"He will or he will find himself escorted to the Commercial Street station," Brodie bluntly replied. "I have authorization from Sir Avery to do so if necessary."

We arrived as we had before, and the driver delivered us to the headmaster's office. We were met with some surprise at the entrance by Mr. Morris, the headmaster’s secretary.

"I will see if Mr. Welldon will see you..." He started to explain as Brodie courteously but forcefully stepped past him and walked to the headmaster's office.

"What is it?" Mr. Welldon asked without looking up. When he finally did, his expression went from surprise to something I could only describe as intense dislike at the sight of Brodie and myself.

"I tried to explain, sir! They were most insistent... and rude!" Mr. Morris explained with a nasty look over at me.

I would have said something quite rude if I was going to be accused of it, however Brodie intervened, fortunate for Mr. Morris.

"We are here in the matter of Andrew Carsten," Brodie explained, and then handed the note that Sir Avery had sent to the headmaster.

"You are being requested to provide all assistance," Brodie explained as the Mr. Welldon opened the note and read it, his expression like stone.

"You are most persistent, Mr. Brodie."

"We want to speak with the master of Mr. Carsten's rooming house, his roommate, as well as the bursar and clerk at the bursar's office. We will be most appreciative to meet with them in the next hour, as well as any others we may determine are necessary after meeting those I've asked for," he continued.

I was seeing Brodie in a different light now, that of the police inspector he had once been, polite but insistent, and then he added additional persuasion. "I'm certain that ye will want to do whatever is necessary to cooperate and preserve the privacy of the other students and the integrity of the school."

Mr. Welldon hesitated. "I will need to consult first with our legal counsel as this is a most delicate matter. I am certain you will understand."

"You will see by the letter and the signature at the bottom, that this is not a request or subject to question or delay," Brodie informed him. "And you should know as well that I am authorized by Sir Avery Stanton to use whatever means might be necessary to obtain your cooperation. And he has the authority to overrule any legal challenge in the matter."

I was impressed. I could well understand how he had risen to the rank of inspector.

"You cannot possibly mean by use of force." Mr. Welldon protested.

"Whatever means, sir," Brodie repeated. "The choice is yours."
